What I Believe

It’s easy to post what you don’t like, what you don’t want, what you oppose and why those who don’t think and feel the same way you do are idiots. But have you ever taken the time to examine who you are and what you truly believe? Trust me, it’s not easy. In August 2017, I sat on a beach for an entire day. No book. No music. No smartphone. And I thought. Here’s my list:

  1. I believe there is a God and there is a Plan, both of which will be revealed on a “need to know” basis.
  2. I believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ but I don’t believe it’s my job to make you agree. There are many pathways to God and what works for me may not necessarily be right for you.
  3. I believe all human beings have equal value.
  4. I believe in the power of empathy. Your thoughts and feelings are as important to you as mine are to me.
  5. That said, I am not responsible for your thoughts, feelings and behavior. That includes how you think, feel and act in response to anything I say or do.
  6. I believe that humans are imperfect and make mistakes.
  7. I believe in the power of repentance, forgiveness and redemption. It is never too late for anyone.
  8. I believe in science and the rule of law. I also believe that one does not have the luxury of choosing when to accept or reject the law or scientifically proven facts.
  9. I am neither an oppressor nor a victim.
  10. Deference does not equal justice. No one person’s thoughts, feelings or rights are greater than any other person’s. See point 3.
  11. I have blind spots. Sometimes I will say and do things that may be hurtful and/or offensive to you. I may not be aware that I have done so at the time. You have the right to tell me you are offended and why. I will listen to what you say with an open heart and an open mind, and when I am wrong, I will apologize and try to make things right.
  12. I try to be a good person and always do the right thing. But I must admit, I frequently fail at both. I’m a work in progress.
  13. I am at my best when I am grateful for what I have.
  14. I believe our similarities are far greater than our differences and that we are at our best when we begin by identifying our common ground.
